Pre-heating is an important part of the pre-flight preparation
for any cold weather operation. Don't force your engine into
early retirement by not taking care of it. Lack of adequate
lubrication, and different metals in the engine having different
coefficients of thermal expansion lead to excessive wear.
Appropriate care of the engine requires that a proper pre-heat
be given to insure the maximum TBO. If you're unsure, consult
your mechanic, or review some of the articles referenced here.
